Douglas
W. Miyazaki, MD, FACOG
A native of Los Angeles, California, Dr. Miyazaki graduated
from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University
in 1990. He then stayed at Wake Forest University and North
Carolina Baptist Hospital for obstetrics and gynecology residency
training. There he was honored as Resident of the Year in 1993
before completing his training in 1994. He then began private
practice with Dr. Steven Cook at WomanCare in 1994.
Dr. Miyazaki is Board Certified and is a Fellow of the American
College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Strongly committed
to family, community and women’s health care issues, he
volunteers his time to serve on many boards and executive committees,
including the Forsyth Infant Mortality Reduction Coalition and
the Forsyth-Stokes-Davie County Medical Society. He is a graduate
of the Leadership Winston-Salem Class of 2000 and also the Leadership
College of the North Carolina State Medical Society in 2003.
Dr. Miyazaki served as president of the Forsyth-Stokes-Davie
County Medical Society in 2005.
Dr. Miyazaki’s professional interests include both low
and high-risk obstetrics and he has completed special training
in advanced laparoscopy, urinary incontinence evaluation and
treatment and pelvic floor reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Miyazaki and his wife, Beverly, have three children. They
enjoy a variety of outdoor activities and sports, especially
skiing, fishing, tennis and Tae Kwon Do.

Melissa
A. Helman, M.D., FACOG
Dr. Helman is a native of Ohio and is a 1991 graduate of the
University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She completed
a Medicine Internship at the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati in
1992 and joined WomanCare in 1996 after completing residency
training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Bowman Gray School
of Medicine at Wake Forest University. She is Board Certified
and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists.
She enjoys all aspects of her specialty including low and high-risk
obstetrics, management of abnormal PAP smears and maternal disorders
as well as preventative gynecologic care from adolescence through
menopause.
Dr. Helman is married to Dr. Steve Helman and they have two
children. In her free time she enjoys hiking, gardening, cooking
and skiing.

Philip
W. Ponder, MD, FACOG
A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Dr. Ponder graduated from
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1986 and
from the UNC School of Medicine in 1990. He completed his obstetrics
and gynecology residency training at the Wake Forest University
School of Medicine (formerly Bowman Gray School of Medicine)
in 1994. After practicing medicine in Raleigh for four years,
he returned to Winston-Salem in 1998 to join WomanCare. Dr.
Ponder is Board Certified and a Fellow of the American College
of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Dr. Ponder's special healthcare interests include laparoscopy,
obstetric ultrasound and the pregnant athlete.
In his free time he enjoys competitive running and nature photography.
Dr. Ponder's wife, Carolyn, is a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner
in an infertility practice. They have a twin daughter and son.

Lewis
D. Lipscomb, MD, FACOG, FACS
A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Dr. Lipscomb is a graduate
of Vanderbilt University with a degree in chemical engineering.
After working in forensic toxicology for the Mississippi State
Medical Examiner, Dr. Lipscomb entered the University of Mississippi
School of Medicine. Upon graduation, he was honored as the most
outstanding student in obstetrics and gynecology.
Dr. Lipscomb completed his internship and residency training
in obstetrics and gynecology at the Wake Forest University School
of Medicine (formerly Bowman Gray School of Medicine). It was
during his clinical rotations that he first met and worked with
the physicians at WomanCare.
Upon completion of his residency program, Dr. Lipscomb worked
for two years in Pinehurst. In 2005, he returned to Winston-Salem
and joined WomanCare.
His professional interests include minimally invasive gynecologic
surgery, high and low-risk obstetrics, and general gynecology.
He is actively involved in establishing electronic medical records
at WomanCare and at Forsyth Medical Center.
Dr. Lipscomb and his wife, Leslie, have two children and are
expecting their third later this year. Outside of the office,
he enjoys time with his family, tackling home improvement and
landscaping projects, Steelers’s football and visiting Starbucks

Pamela
A. Oliver, MD, Board Eligible
Dr. Oliver was born and raised in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
A Morehead Scholar, she attended the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill, earning a degree in Biology. She graduated from
the UNC School of Medicine in 2001 as a Board of Governor’s
Scholar. While enrolled in medical school, she also completed
a Masters of Science in Public Health in Maternal & Child
Health from the UNC School of Public Health.
Dr. Oliver served her obstetrics and gynecology residency training
at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical School (formerly Bowman
Gray School of Medicine). During residency, she received a Resident
Teaching Award and served as Chief Resident. Dr. Oliver is eligible
for certification by the American College of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists.
She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and is also
a member of the American Medical Association, the National Medical
Association, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Her main interests are adolescent health and racial disparities
in health outcomes.
She is married to Dr. J. Mark Oliver, DDS, who practices dentistry
in Winston-Salem and they have a twin daughter and son. While
Dr. Oliver’s main hobby is playing mommy, she does enjoy
Pilates, Yoga, cooking, photography and travel.

Allison
Luper, CNM, MSN
A native of North Carolina, Allison Luper received a Bachelor’s
Degree in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro
School of Nursing in 1987. She worked in high-risk obstetrics
at Forsyth Medical Center for 10 years and has participated
in obstetrical research with the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Unit
of the National Institute of Health for six years. She then
continued her nursing education and received a Master’s
Degree in Nursing and Midwifery from East Carolina University
in 1999 prior to joining WomanCare.
Allison’s special interests are pregnancy, well-woman
gynecology and working with adolescents.
In her free time she enjoys golfing, boating and traveling with
her family.

Diane
Parks, CNM, MSN, FNP, WHNP
Diane Parks received a Master’s of Science Degree as a
Family Nurse Practitioner from the Medical College of Virginia
in Richmond, Virginia. She also earned additional degrees as
a Nurse Midwife and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner
from the Frontier School of Nurse Midwifery and Family Nursing
in Kentucky.
Diane is nationally certified as an Inpatient Obstetrics Registered
Nurse, Nurse Midwife, and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner.
She is also a member of the American College of Nurse Midwives,
the American College of Nurse Practitioners and the North Carolina
Nurse Practitioner Association.
Diane’s special interests are healthcare during the menopausal
years, including bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and
total wellness for women of all ages. Her time away from work
is focused on home renovations, lake activities and travel throughout
the United States and Europe.

Nona
Smith, CNM, MSN, RDMS
Nona is a
Certified Nurse Midwife, providing care and treatment for obstetric
and gynecologic patients. She has experience in adult critical
care as well as labor and delivery, antepartum testing/perinatal
ultrasound, and maternal-fetal medicine research. Her special
interests are ultrasound in pregnancy, pregnancy care and bio-identical
hormone replacement. Nona is also a Registered Diagnostic Medical
Sonographer.
Nona is a native of Greensboro, North Carolina. She received
her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from UNC-Greensboro
in 1983. In 1999, she completed a Master of Science Degree in
Nursing with Nurse Midwifery Certificate at East Carolina University.
In her off time, she enjoys spending time with her three sons
and husband. She enjoys baking, gardening and needlework.

Cindy
Backus, WHNP
A native of Virginia, Cindy Backus received her Nursing Degree
at Bluefield State College in Bluefield, West Virginia, and
trained as a Nurse Practitioner at Emory University in Atlanta,
Georgia. Cindy is certified by the National Certification Corporation
Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties.
Cindy is very active professionally and is a member of the Association
of Women’s Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nurses, the
Piedmont Association of Physician’s Assistants, the North
Carolina Nurse Practitioner Association, the Executive Education
Committee for the Susan Komen Foundation and the Winston-Salem/Forsyth
County Breast Cancer Coalition.
Cindy’s special interests are in community education and
women’s health issues including childbirth preparation
and breast cancer. In her time off she enjoys the beach, outdoor
recreation and spending time with her large family.

Rhonda
Dixon, WHNP
Rhonda is nationally certified as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner,
providing care and treatment for obstetric and gynecologic patients.
She has been practicing for over 10 years in an OB GYN office
in Mt. Airy before moving to Clemmons, North Carolina.
Rhonda received her Bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University
of North Carolina at Charlotte School of Nursing in 1991. She
worked in Labor & Delivery and the High Risk unit for 5
years. She then continued her nursing education and received
a Master’s of Science Degree as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner
from Vanderbilt University in 1996.
Rhonda’s special interests are breast feeding support, pregnancy
and working with adolescents. She is married and has one son.
In her free time she enjoys family time, yoga, gardening and
camping.

Sandi
Hamilton, MS, RD, LDN
A native of North Carolina, Sandi Hamilton earned a Bachelor
of Science Degree in Nutrition from Appalachian State University
in 1989. After working as a spa nutritionist for several years,
Sandi then pursued her Master’s Degree in Nutrition from
Hunter College in New York City, which she completed in 1996.
Sandi did her clinical training at Our Lady of Mercy Medical
Center in New York and subsequently practiced Clinical Dietetics
at Our Lady of Mercy for two years. While in New York she also
attended Peter Kumps’ Professional Cooking School where
she learned gourmet spa and vegetarian cooking. Upon returning
to North Carolina, Sandi joined the staff at WomanCare as a
Nutrition Therapist.
Sandi is licensed by the North Carolina Board of Dietetics and
registered by the American Dietetic Association. She is a member
of the American Dietetic Association and the Winston-Salem Dietetic
Association.
Sandi’s special interests include Women’s Health,
especially pregnancy, breast feeding, weight control and eating
disorders. Sandi is available for group presentations and seminars
on nutrition.
In her leisure time, Sandi enjoys spending time with her husband
and daughter, reading and cooking.

Jennifer
Greenly, MS, RD, LDN
Jennifer Greenly is a native of eastern Pennsylvania. She earned
her Bachelor of Science Degree in Food and Nutrition Science
from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1993. She worked
as a dietitian assistant at the University of Michigan Medical
Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, before returning to graduate
school. Jennifer completed her dietetic internship and Master’s
Degree in Human Nutrition at the University of Delaware in 1997
and 1998, respectively.
While at Delaware, she earned the American Dietetic Association’s
Outstanding Dietetic Intern Award for the state of Delaware.
Jennifer has presented nutrition research at several national
Dietetic Association meetings and recently published an article
in “Today’s Dietitian” about working in an
OB/GYN office. She joined WomanCare in 2002 after practicing
in a clinical setting for several years. Jennifer is a member
of the American Dietetic Association and the Winston Salem District
Dietetic Association. Additionally, she is licensed by the North
Carolina Board of Dietetics/Nutrition.
Jennifer’s interests encompass pregnancy nutrition (including
helping with “morning” sickness), breastfeeding
support, cardiovascular disease and weight control.
In her free time, Jennifer enjoys spending time with her husband,
son and daughter. She also enjoys reading, gardening and scrapbooking.
